Choosing an Advertising School

Advertising Schools & Careers

One of the greatest things about studying advertising is that programs are everywhere. All over the country and throughout the world there are exciting programs aimed at graduating highly-qualified advertising professionals. This makes where to go to school a big decision. Close to home or as far away as possible? Big city or small town?

One must also decide exactly how to focus their advertising studies. Writing and art are some of the main components of advertising, but they cannot come together without the work of sales representatives, buyers, layout directors, and a host of others. It is also important to choose between a four-year college, which will offer a liberal arts background, and a career school that provides specialized advertising instruction.

No matter which kind of school, however, the student should be sure to look at career placement statistics. Where are graduates working and how long does it take the average alumnus to find full-time employment? What kind of career services does the school offer? An important factor in advertising is a portfolio, which can make a world of difference in scoring a job interview and landing the first job. Check into a school's curriculum and see how hands-on it is, as well as what work is aimed toward the portfolio. Lastly, verify the school is accredited and/or licensed by a reputable organization.
